What are Terpenes?

You might have heard about terpenes in relation to CBD, but it’s not just a buzzword! Terpenes can make a huge difference to the CBD vaping experience, so we wanted to explain a bit more about what terpenes are and what they do in CBD.

Terpenes are natural compounds found in some plant species which are responsible for flavours and scents.

Think about the smell of pine needles when you pick out a real Christmas tree; that smell is down to the tree’s terpenes. There are hundreds of different terpenes that have been identified, but the common ones most relevant to CBD fall into groups including:

  • Limonene – commonly found in citrus fruits, including lemons (the name is a bit of a giveaway), this terpene can contribute to the flavour and aroma found in some CBD vape e-liquids.

  • Myrcene – this terpene has a rich and earthy aroma which is commonly associated with cannabis but is totally separate from the compound (THC) responsible for the ‘high’.

  • Pinene – the same terpene that helps give pine needles that distinctive scent is also found in many types of hemp plant.

  • Caryophyllene – commonly found in many leafy green vegetables as well as the cannabis plant, this terpene adds a unique flavour element when included in CBD.

As well as the above, there are many other naturally occurring terpenes found in cannabis plants, which all add something unique when included in CBD products too and can have a big impact on the taste and smell. With CBD vaping specifically, this can help to give a more authentic experience which many vapers really enjoy.

What difference do terpenes make in CBD?

With CBD, the products with most terpenes will be full-spectrum, rather than broad spectrum CBD. Full spectrum CBD is processed in a different way to broad-spectrum, and means that many of the naturally occurring terpenes remain present.

The presence of these terpenes can be measured in lab tests, so those buying these CBD products can easily find out what is included in a variety of different vape juices and e-liquids.

With terpenes in a CBD product, something comes in to play called the ‘entourage effect’, which is a theory that suggests the cannabinoids and terpenes in CBD work even better together than they do in isolation, due to the way that they interact with the body and brain’s endocannabinoid receptors.

While research into CBD and terpenes is still in its early stages in relation to potential medical or therapeutic benefits, many of those who vape using CDD e-liquids such as our award-winning Cali range, believe that terpenes really add something positive for them to their CBD vaping experience overall.

Terpenes or no terpenes?

Whether you should choose CBD vape liquids with terpenes or not will always come down to personal preference.

For those who like an authentic and realistic vaping experience and wish to benefit from the entourage effect when they vape, a CBD e-liquid containing terpenes would be a great fit.

At Orange Country CBD, our full-spectrum CBD vape liquids contain no THC, but some contain carefully selected cannabinoids and terpenes to help enhance the vaping experience and come in a range of flavours.

If you would rather have a focused CBD experience with your vaping, our range also includes CBD vape juice that contains no terpenes or additional cannabinoids, so there is something for every vaper.

As with any type of CBD product, if you’re new to CBD, it’s recommended that you start with a lower dose (lower strength) e-liquid and you can increase it gradually over time if required.

Our CBD vape products are available in a range of strengths so you can easily keep track of your dose.

Don’t forget to check out our Cali range and our other CBD vape e-liquids to choose something that’s right for you. You can find out more about our CBD products in our FAQs.
